2011 Big Brother Africa winner, Karen Igho, is suing Smirnoff, makers of Smirnoff Ice, for N50million over an alleged assault suffered by her from a security officer reportedly contracted by Smirnoff for their event held in December 2012.
While at the Smirnoff 3D Disco party held on December 15, 2012 at the Landmark Event Centre, Lagos, Karen, also an OAP with Naija FM, Lagos, was at the show to support Denrele, who is her friend, when an ‘over-zealous’ security man allegedly hired by Smirnoff slapped her and also pointed a gun at her demanding money from her at the parting lot of the event venue.
Karen tweeted the picture of her swollen face on her twitter timeline after the incident and then narrated her ordeal on the micro-blogging site.
Tweeting some hours ago, 27 years old Karen hinted that she is suing Smirnoff in the sum of N50million. She also disclosed that the officer, believed to be a policeman, who allegedly slapped her, is on the verge of losing his job.
She wrote, “Got the guy dat slapped me. I just wanna teach him a lesson of never hitting a woman in his life. he is about loosing his job now he is saying sorry.”
Tweeting further on her plan to slam the sum of N50million on the show organiser, Smirnoff, the Warri, Delta State star added, “Suing Smirnof ice for 50million naira for damages.”
Vimbai released a statement asking for an apology from Denrele over his tweet at her after the alleged snubbing of a video shoot by Karen Igho. Rep for the Big Brother alum have released a responding statement. It read:
A press release allegedly by a representative of Vimbai Mutinhiri (former BBA housemate from Zimbabwe) on the viral social media story– which suggests that the effervescence Ms Karen Igho, deliberately refused to be part of a photo shoot session with her for ‘Miss Dee’ magazine.
While this release frowns on any form of ‘SHE SAID, HE SAID’ controversy, Ms Karen’s love for her ever supportive fans and media friends made her request that her position be made public.
Ms Igho was approached in Abuja on the 4th September, 2011 by the publisher of Miss Dee magazine at a casual meet to participate in a photo shoot for the magazine, but no exact time was proposed because at the time Ms Karen was preoccupied with spending quality time with her family in Jos; more so as she had just returned from the BigBrother Africa house and needed a relief from the Amplified euphoria.
However, Ms Karen recently got a call with respect to the photo shoot, but for her engagement with her friend, Mr Denrele Edun on the ‘Heavy Beauty’ movie production set she could have gladly obliged. Hence, it is not practical that Ms Igho who was on a movie set in Lagos refused or walked away from being part of a photo shoot session with Vimbai in Abuja.
Ms Karen has being in frequent communication with housemates, even proven with the time spent with Millicent (Kenya) when she came to Nigeria in spite of the ‘House’ confrontations between both during the BBA game episode.
To further reinforce Ms Karen Igho’s friendly disposition to her fellow housemates from BBA Amplified; Ms Karen had begun sending out official invites to WENDALL PARSON (Zimbabwe), LUCLAY ‘MR OTONO’ (S/Africa), WEZA SOLANGE (Angola), LOMWE (Malawi), MUMBA MWAKWA (Zambia), BERNADINA BUYS (Nambia) and their country counterparts in the BBA house in anticipation of a reunion party in Nigeria towards her April 6th birth date celebration. The weekend activity will feature the launch of Ms Karen’s T-shirt line, a BBA housemates’ media tour, charity visits to orphanage homes and the media launch of her upcoming reality TV shoot (details will be made explicit in a release towards the event).
It is Ms Karen’s view that if Vimbai has something to say to her friend, Mr Denrele Edun it’s best done through inter-personal communication and she frowns at any insinuation of ‘war’ with anyone, as in the words of the Destiny Child’s song ‘Survivor’ Miss Karen is better than that.
Finally, we like to empathize with ‘Miss Dee’ magazine and request that the media please redirect their channel of inquiry.
Karen Igho, who was one of two winners of this year’s edition of the reality show,

Nigerian born winner of Big Brother Amplified, Karen Igho, arrived the country, Thursday, to a rousing welcome from BBA fans as well as 34 officials of the Multi-Choice Nigerian Company, provider of DSTV channels, sponsors of the reality TV show.
At home she is not the quiet type, her siblings need not argue with her because she will always stand her ground, her mother may not be too comfortable with that kind of attitude yet she but she sees the potentials in it. In spite of this, her friends like her for being always herself.
Welcome to the world of Karen Igho, one of the winners of this year’s edition of the Big Brother Africa reality TV show, ‘Big Brother Amplified’.
During the 13 weeks (91 days) she spent in the Big Brother House in Johannesburg, South Africa, she lived her life as though she was home with her siblings and friends. That probably was her winning strategy as African viewers only cast their votes to save those who live up to the reality of the show-by just being herself without living in pretence. Her naughtiness in the house posed the biggest contest for other 25 housemates from 14 African countries for the whopping Big Brother $200,000 prize money each for two winners.
If you followed the show from the day one on May 1, 2011 when it was launched, till the 90th day when the hearts of the Top Seven housemates were beating uncontrollably because of the tension pilling up for the grand finals, Karen was still her old self. She refused to change. She was the naughty Nigerian housemate that almost bares her body, that kept involving in many romantic escapades in the houses, she was also jealous when other female housemates went after her male spec, quarreled, disagreed, argued, openly expressed her displeasure, contested, and what have you.
In all these she still has a heart of gold. She loved, laughed, cried, apologised for her wrong doings, showed affection and most importantly, sacrificed her chances of winning the prize money when she nominated herself instead of a fellow housemate when she was the house leader.
Probably that was why Africa saved her. “I can’t be you. I am Karen and everybody who comes across me knows that. Why live like you as if my life is inferior”, Karen queries during an interview shortly after her victory in South Africa.
While African viewers may be far from this reality, her fellow housemate especially the likes of South African Luclay, Zeus, Weza, Millicent and Lomwe will attest to her strong and real personality.
While making her way to the venue that on that Sunday final show, her grace and confidence that were raved up by the cheering crowd confirm her acceptance. Even the confidence with which she greeted the audience, the joy and jumping at seeing her mother and her usual naughty looks and cheers at evicted housemate who congregate to crown the winner all set her aside as the chosen one.
When ask by IK, the anchor of the show since its launch this year on how she was feeling, the confidence in her voice and her very settled mind were evident of her strong and real character.
On the announcement that declared her first winner, she simply broke down in tears, while white Zimbabwean Wendell Parson, the second winner of the $200,000, did not show much enthusiasm over his victory. “I am grateful to you Africa for seeing me through this far”, she said while still surprised at her new status as a millionaire. If care to know, her father died of HIV/AIDS, and she is dedicating part of the money to healthcare delivery starting with her immediate community in Nigeria and hopefully Africa at large.
Truly, Wendell’s announcement dried the cheerfulness and enthusiasm of the audience who thought that Luclay, the South African housemate was robbed of his victory by the 23-year old white Zimbabwean commercial pilot.
However, a little protest followed shortly at the venue by Luclay’s home fans whose action almost marred the show but for the tight security provided by South African Police and other security outfits. But Biola Alabi, managing director, M-Net Africa, cleared the air on the controversy and replayed to the African media how the entire continent voted. Kazren won with six countries votes, Wendell won with four while Luclay has two-South Africa and Botswana. Yet, the aggrieved South African fans still smelt foul play with the winning of Wendell. Some thought Big Brother used that to compensate Zimbabwe for the loss of Munya, the Zimbabwean housemate, in last year’s edition to Nigerian Uti Nwachukwu, the eventual winner.
The success of 27-year-old Karen is the third consecutive time Nigeria is winning in the highly competitive show, while South Africa, the host country is yet to win since six years the show commenced. That probably explained why the South African fans were angry at the turn of the event, but the reality is that they did not vote as much to keep their countryman flying to a victorious finish.
THREE Big Brother Amplified housemates – Namibia’s Bernadina, Botswana’s Zeus and Zambia’s Mumba – were evicted last night
Many people thought the bubbly Bernadina had a chance to make final the stretch. Although she is talkative, she operated under the radar, thus surviving this long in the BBA house.
She now wants to play for the South African women rugby squad.
The Botswana rapper left the house just after telling Nigeria’s Karen that she may be interested in her. Zeus was still begging Karen to give him a chance. This is the man who had turned down Karen’s amorous advances because he insisted he had a girlfriend back home.
Karen, like a dog on heat, had been pursuing Zeus with single minded determination even though she was consistently rejected.
At least this past Saturday she did not have to drag Zeus to bed or take her panties off in the bath tub or even strip naked to convince the rapper.
She did, however, leave little to the imagination with outfits that showed her assets to perfection.
Zambia’s Mumba did not do much to market herself to Africa. She kept a low profile, opting to run errands for the housemates.
and Vina, by virtue of winning the Head of House Task on Friday and surviving Eviction on Sunday, she became the first Amplified Housemate to be guaranteed a spot in the Final week.
She has a Save and Replace decision and in the event she does not opt to place herself on the firing line the same way Karen did when she was Head of House, she can safely consider herself one step closer to the big prize.
Since there’s only one Eviction Show left before the Finale, Vina can use powers vested upon her as Head of House and secure a shot at the USD200 000 prize money.
Big Brother Africa is a reality TV show on DSTV channel 198 which features 14 African countries. The show is for 91 days and, on the last day, a winner emerges to claim the grand prize of 200,000 USD.
