Tim Westwood has been removed from his 1Xtra Drivetime show on Saturday afternoons.
Love him or loathe him, Tim Westwood has been flying the flag for hip hop on UK airwaves for two decades now. Recently given 1Xtra’s Drivetime show, the presenter’s selections could be heard from 4pm – 7pm, Monday to Friday.
However in a new timetable shake up, Tim Westwood will lose his place on the show. Exiting the Drivetime slot in September, an official statement from the present said simply: “It’s been a lot of fun and a great experience.”
Opening up his Twitter feed, though, Westwood presented a different side to the story. “It’s official I’ve lost my afternoon voice due to schedule changes I will not be presentin 1Xtra Mon-Fri 4-7pm from Sept” he wrote.
The presenter the wrote: “I’ve been sacked from 1Xtra Mon-Fri 4-7pm from sept #Westwoodyourfired. I don’t like gettin fired #Westwoodyourefired – 1Xtra.”
To be fair to 1Xtra, Tim Westwood won’t be disappearing from the station. The broadcaster’s regular Saturday night slot will be simulcast between Radio 1 and 1Xtra. In addition to this, the BBC have confirmed that Westwood will front a new Sunday evening show between 7pm – 9pm.
The Drivetime slot will be presented by DJ Charlie Sloth from September. Radio 1Xtra Controller Ben Cooper said: “Tim has proved to be one of the most influential figures in UK hip-hop and I’m delighted that he will continue to bring his wealth of knowledge and unique style to Radio 1 and 1Xtra across the weekends.”
