Firmdale goes full circleStephanie HirschmillerWednesday, March 14, 2012
The Dorset Square Hotel was where it all began for Firmdale husband and wife team Tim and Kit Kemp. They bought the hotel in 1985 and let’s just say the rest is history. However being a rather ‘early adopter’ – it was sold off back in 2002 – you might not have heard of it til now.
The Kemps reacquired the Dorset Square Hotel last year and have since been showing it a little love. They’ve embarked upon an extensive refurbishment so it’s currently being stamped good and proper with Kit Kemp’s signature style – all those bold colours and textures for which she is known – and being filled with bespoke and one-off pieces and original art collected from around the globe.
The property itself, due to reopen in June of this year, is a beautiful Regency townhouse with 38 bedrooms, many of which look onto the leafy private garden square which was originally the site of Thomas Lord’s first cricket ground.
Each bedroom is being individually designed tol feature WiFi, flat widescreen TVs and iPod docks while bathrooms are of marble and oak, have freestanding showers and luxurious Miller Harris bath products. There will also feature a sumptuous guest drawing room with a fireplace and a fun all-day bar and restaurant.
Firmdale now boasts six hotels in London, including the Haymarket Hotel, The Soho Hotel, Covent Garden Hotel and Charlotte Street of course and The Dorset Square Hotel will be lucky number seven. New York outpost, Crosby Street Hotel is the group’s first foray across the pond.
