Kelis tweets desire to get back to New York after it emerges she ‘has a California tax lien too’
Last week it emerged she owed hundreds of thousands of American dollars in her home state of New York.
However it appears Kelis Rogers has even more tax troubles to worry about after completing the promotional rounds for her new single Distance.
The 32-year-old singer allegedly owes funds to the State of California and the federal government, leaving her debt at almost double the original reported sum.
The Milkshake star could have to pay up to $606,096.12 according to documents obtained by TMZ.
Her West Coast figure is summed up to be $61,737.29, with an additional $213,932.02 owed to the United States for the tax years 2009 and 2010.
The thought of facing the music was not at all off-putting for the artist, who showed she was eager to get back to New York from a stint in Europe.
After complaining that her driver could not get her to the departures lounge soon enough, as she zoomed past London tourist attractions such as Big Ben, she sought comfort in talking to her Twitter followers.
She tweeted: ‘I’m headed to the airport, and this driver is literally giving me heartburn! He is driving so slow! I’m talkin 35 mph slow! I want to cry!’
Upon landing she added: ‘Even though it feels like someone squeezing me in a sweaty armpit in ny right now, there’s no place I’d rather be! Wepa.’
She had graced a number of big European music festivals.
Another tax lien reportedly showed that she owes $330,426,71 for the years 2004 and 2010.
She is thought to have earned in excess of what could be considered her usual amount for the earlier tax year, as she supported Britney Spears on her The Onyx Hotel tour.
Then two years ago Kelis headlined her own concert dates as she travelled the United States with Swedish singer Robyn.
While recently she has performed at Lovebox, Isle of Wight and Kollen festivals.
In February this year, it emerged that the performer’s rapper ex-husband, Nas, failed to pay $339,005.49 in federal income tax which he owed for 2010.
The incident caused the American government to obtain a lien on his property.
According to public records, he also had $6 million in back taxes from previous years.
In March, the famously private MC complained about having to fork out plenty of cash in child support payments because of his messy divorce.
He told MTV: ‘Life is crazy. I [wound] up paying more money to baby mommas than what some of my rap brothers and sistren make.’
Apparently Kelis was seeking around $45,000 per month in child and spousal support from the father of two.
Nas has daughter Destiny from a previous relationship and son Knight with the Milkshake singer.
However the figure was allegedly reduced in 2011 by a court to a $25,000 month.
He added: ‘So [the divorce] put a lot of my business out there, man. People weren’t thinking I was making that kind of money, and now they knew.’
